The WEFT project

The Web Evolution in Filament Targeted zoom simulations (WEFT) project, conducted by myself and Saleem Zaroubi, aims to better understand the gas dynamics in cosmic filaments by adapting the zoom technique of cosmological simulations onto these objects. The pathfinder run of this project simulated a medium-size filament using the AREPO code, reaching a median cell size of 8 kpc at z=0. In the first article exploiting this first run, we showed how intermittent turbulence emerges in this filament over cosmic time, we’ll pursue the study of gas flows in this filament by characterising the multifractal nature of turbulence and its transport towards the spine of the filament through Kelvin-Helmoltz instabilities. More filaments will be simulated in the future, both to explore deeper the physical processes at play in its diffuse gas and to provide observation forecasts of these famous missing baryons through SKA and LIM experiments.
We are open to any idea of projects that could make use of these simulations, if you have any please don’t hesitate to contact us!
